In the golden light of sunset, a model walks across the coastal sand beside an extraordinary wooden-bodied vehicle created by the artisanal fishermen of Mostardas, in southern Brazil. Behind them, the Atlantic Ocean and a clear blue sky bring openness and tranquility to the scene, while the warm light reveals the textures of wood, sand and skin.
Part of the series Wooden Machines & Models, this photograph creates an unexpected dialogue between fashion and vernacular invention: feminine elegance moving alongside a rugged machine shaped by necessity, labor and life by the sea.
Photographed in April 2001 on Fuji Velvia 50 ISO color transparency film with analog cameras, including my Hasselblad 503 CW, the work preserves the vivid color and luminous atmosphere of this singular encounter on the southern Brazilian coast.
